  • There are still active faults along the Graben and the surrounding Ottawa Valley.
  • The Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben leads into many other lakes, such as Lake Timiskaming and Lake Nipissing.
  • The Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben of Kay was the first areas to be recognized as a graben in 1942. (Kumarapeli, 1981)
  • It is estimated that the length of the graben is at least 700 km. long! (Kumarapeli, 1981)
  • The English word 'graben' is derived from a German word meaning 'Trench'. (Parker, 2008)
  • The first people to live in and around the Ottawa Valley is believed to be the Algonquians (Algonkians).  Since before the 1600's, settling along the Ottawa-Bonnechere graben. (Day, Gordon M., 2005)  Click on the Chief below for more information on this tribe! 
  • The Nipissing tribe also settled around the graben, specifically at Lake Nipissing.  This tribe was well-known for their shamans and their amazing capabilities of a spiritual nature.  They were even accused of sorcery at times. (Sultzmann, Lee.  2006)
